This modern informational placard in Downtown Carbondale commemorates an alleged UFO sighting on November 9, 1974, when a mysterious “glowing airborne object” was reported to have crashed into the silt pond behind Russell Park. In the days that followed, thousands gathered at the site, including local authorities, federal agents, and even a scuba diver who took part in the investigation.
Alien Flying Saucer Mural at Station 51

Fifty-one years after the reported UFO crash, a bold UFO-themed mural now brightens the side of Carbondale’s Fire Bureau Station 51. Created by local artist Zach Yahn as part of a downtown public art project, The Carbondale Encounter mural nods to both the city’s 1974 UFO legend and the lore of Area 51, adding a cosmic splash of character to North Main Street.
