McDade Park

Scranton’s McDade Park is one of Lackawanna County’s premier family-friendly destinations for outdoor recreation and relaxation. Located on 180 acres of reclaimed coal mining terrain, it was named “A Great Place in Pennsylvania” and “A Great Public Space” in 2023 by the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association. McDade Park also features a Boundless Playground, designed so children of all abilities and needs can play together in this beautiful green space.

Nearly two miles of scenic trails allow hikers and nature enthusiasts to experience the park’s natural beauty. The trails are also ideal for cross-country running.

A fishing pond for children is restocked several times a year.

McDade Park is a sports lovers paradise! There are basketball, tennis, volleyball, and bocce courts, as well as a softball field and a multipurpose field that can be used for soccer or lacrosse. There are also large open fields that are perfect for cross-country skiing in the winter or Frisbee any other season. Free sports equipment rentals are available.

Guests can cool off during the summer in an Olympic-sized swimming pool or a kid-friendly splash pad. Admission is free, and the pool is open and lifeguarded seven days a week in season. There is also a bathhouse where you can shower and change.

McDade’s Boundless Playground is safe and fun for all children! Slides and swings are wheelchair accessible, and there are plenty of areas for kids to climb, twirl, and explore. A special rubber safety surface cushions falls. The playground includes a butterfly garden, wind chimes, sand and water tables, and two quiet areas for children with autism or sensory issues.

McDade Park is a great location for family picnics, reunions, and other outdoor celebrations. Choose between two pavilions that can be rented for group gatherings and an outdoor picnic grove with charcoal grills. Contact the Parks and Recreation Department to make a reservation.

Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour in McDade Park
Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton, PA

Descend into history on the Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour, located within the park. This hour-long guided tour starts with a 300-foot descent in a mine car. Dress warmly and prepare to learn about the region’s coal mining heritage as you explore this anthracite mine.

You can also learn more about the area’s industrial past at the PA Anthracite Heritage Museum. The museum tells the stories of the immigrants who worked in the mines and the communities they formed here in NEPA.

The Cancer Memorial Garden & Arboretum pays tribute to those who’ve been touched by cancer. Featuring beautiful benches, landscaping, and personalized bricks, this contemplative space allows people to find peace and inspiration as they honor loved ones.

The park’s athletic facilities are often used for youth sports clinics or leagues. In wintertime, McDade’s open fields are a great place for sledding or cross-country skiing. No place is cooler in the summertime than their recently renovated pool and splash pad. 

McDade Park also hosts fun community festivals, markets, and events. Every year, they take part in Art in the Park, which invites kids to express themselves through fun art activities. The annual Paws in the Park event benefits the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter and features adoptable pets, food trucks, live music, raffles, and local vendors.

McDade Park is located at 1 Bald Mountain Road in Scranton and is open daily from dawn to dusk. Free parking is available throughout the park, including by the entrance, pavilions, and athletic fields, with additional accessible parking areas. Multiple restrooms are available. Trails can be accessed at several locations. Please follow all posted rules.
