SCRANTON WELCOMES YOU SIGN
A Must-See Office Photo Op in Downtown Scranton, PA
As featured in the opening credits of The Office, the Scranton Welcomes You sign has become a must-visit photo op in Downtown Scranton for fans of the show and travelers exploring the Electric City. Originally mounted along the Scranton exit of I-81—then known as the Central Scranton Expressway (now the President Biden Expressway)—the sign drew so much attention that fans began stopping unsafely to take photos. As a result, the original sign was eventually removed.
Today, a replica of the iconic Scranton sign offers a safe, accessible, and equally memorable experience inside The Marketplace at Steamtown (formerly the Steamtown Mall), right in the heart of Downtown Scranton, PA.

Where to Find the Scranton Welcomes You Sign
The replica sign is located on the second floor of The Marketplace at Steamtown, at 300 Lackawanna Avenue, Scranton, PA, just off the escalator in the center of the shopping center.

As Seen in The Office Opening Credits
The Scranton Welcomes You sign is one of several real Scranton landmarks featured in The Office’s iconic opening sequence. In 2004, shortly after being cast as Jim Halpert, actor John Krasinski made a personal trip to Scranton to better understand his character’s hometown. During his visit, he filmed footage of local landmarks from a vehicle, including shots that were later used in the show’s title sequence.
Footage captured by Krasinski and seen in the opening credits includes:
- The Pennsylvania Paper & Supply Co. building (with the tower)
- A Mulberry Street sign in Downtown Scranton
- The original Scranton Welcomes You sign
These authentic clips helped ground the series in a real place, turning Scranton into a beloved pop culture destination.
