Explore 300 feet beneath the earth's surface on the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, a National Award-Winning History Attraction that originally opened as a working mine in 1860. Descend slowly into the earth in a mine car as you enter the old Slope #190. Follow your guide through the winding underground gangways and tunnels past three different veins of coal. Listen as they take you back in time and show you the day in the life of the area's workers that powered the Industrial Revolution.

The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour is open to the general public on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The ticket office opens at 10:00 AM, and the first tour departs around 11:00 AM, depending on the demand. Tickets are not sold in advance. The tours run between the hours of 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. It is recommended that you arrive no later than 2:00 PM - 2:15 PM to be assured a seat on the final tour of the day which leaves around 3:00 PM. This relies on demand, and the last tour is not always guaranteed, depending on the demand.

The mine is handicapped accessible with some restrictions. A handout is also available for the hearing-impaired who are not accompanied by an interpreter. Please contact their office for specific accessibility limitations. Parking is free in the lots adjacent to the Coal Mine Tour main building, the Shifting Shanty. Handicapped and motor coach parking is also available.
