Lackawanna County has plenty of fun things to do during summer vacation to keep the whole family entertained.
Take Yourself Out to a Ball Game
Nothing says summer fun like a baseball game! Visit PNC Field to watch the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. Every game is packed with family-friendly entertainment. Check out their schedule for special theme nights, promotions, and giveaways, including post-game fireworks and Family FunDays!
Make New (Animal) Friends
Over the weekend, stop by Safari Farm Petting Zoo to learn about and interact with a menagerie of barnyard and exotic animals, from goats to camels, and even kangaroos! At Indraloka Animal Sanctuary, you can schedule a private tour or attend an event to see first-hand what it looks like to rescue farm animals like alpacas, cows, pigs, and horses and give them a loving home.
Beat the Heat
On hot days, visit Montage Mountain Waterpark to cool down. Featuring a variety of slides, rides, and pools as well as cabana rentals, the grownups can relax while the kids have a blast.
Bring Out Your Competitive Side
Lahey Family Fun Park has a variety of activities that are sure to please everyone. Start with a round of mini-golf at one of their two shaded 18-hole courses before getting your adrenaline pumping as you race go-karts or drive bumper boats. Finish the day at the batting cages or the indoor arcade.
Celebrate the Season
There’s so much summer fun to be had at Lakeland Orchard. Enjoy mouthwatering seasonal food and beverages corresponding to their monthly festivals: June is Strawberry Festival, July is Summer Fest, and August is Blooms and Butterflies. Then take a leisurely train ride around the orchard on the Lakeland Express or a thrilling twirl on the iconic Scrambler. Kids will love the Country Carousel and a sandbox filled with corn, while adults can enjoy the axe-throwing area. Weekends also feature live music.
Discover Local History
If you’re looking for something both educational and fun, take your family on the award-winning Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour. You’ll travel 300 feet underground and walk through a restored coal mine, where you’ll see first-hand what day-to-day life was like for local miners. Or learn about the history of the steam engine at Steamtown National Historic Site. Make sure to check the train ride schedule for a chance to ride the rails! While you’re there, visit the interactive exhibits at the Electric City Trolley Station & Museum and discover why Scranton is called “The Electric City.” Finish things off with a five-mile ride on an authentic trolley!
