overview
Ice Harvesting was a major industry in the Poconos in the early 1900s. Railroads were critical for the shipment of harvested ice to metropolitan areas. Upon arrival, visitors have the option to participate in a walking tour of the Tobyhanna Millpond #1 Ice House where an ice harvest is held each year. It is about a ½ mile (one-way) walk to see historic ice harvesting tools and ice harvested from January. Will the harvest from January 2022 still be around in July? Join the tour and find out!
The Tobyhanna train station was built in 1908 by the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad and was leased and restored by the Pocono Mountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in 1994. Today, the station serves as the chapter's meeting space and it houses a collection of railroad artifacts including two running model train layouts plus a small gift shop.
The train ride will last approximately 1 hour; departing Steamtown at 11 a.m. and arriving in Tobyhanna at 12 p.m. There will be a 2.5-hour layover at the Tobyhanna Station for the event. Returning train ride will last approximately 1 hour; departing Tobyhanna at 2:30 p.m. and arriving in Steamtown at 3:30 p.m.
