Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour
Explore 300 feet beneath the earth's surface through an anthracite coal mine in Scranton, PA, that originally opened in 1860. Follow your guide through the winding underground gangways and tunnels past three different veins of coal. The Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour is a National Award-Winning History Attraction. Descend slowly into the earth in a mine car as you enter the old Slope #190. Watch the sky slowly disappear. Soon you’ve reached “the foot.” Then explore 300 feet beneath the earth through an anthracite coal mine.
Located at McDade Park in Scranton, PA, it brings mining history alive as you listen to your guide explain the fascinating methods used and the heroic efforts involved in deep mining history. Afterward, be sure to visit the Anthracite Heritage Museum to learn the history of hard coal mining, its related industries, and the immigrant culture of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The museum highlights life in the mines, mills, and factories.
ACCESSIBILITY
The mine is handicapped accessible with some restrictions. A handout is also available for the hearing-impaired who are not accompanied by an interpreter. Please contact their office for specific limitations on accessibility.
Hot Tip
The descent down the slope takes 3-4 minutes. The walking portion of the tour is approximately a 1/2 mile and lasts one hour. The temperature in the mine is 53°F year-round. A light jacket and comfortable shoes are recommended. While waiting for your tour, you can watch an introductory video about mining in the theater that is located in the interpretive center, where the tour tickets are sold.
