Many people have sung carols about “scary ghost stories” since childhood without ever giving them a second thought. Others have seen the many varieties of Dicken’s “Christmas Carol” without ever wondering how ghost stories came to relate to the Christmas holiday. Still, others celebrate every time George Bailey experiences his brush with death, in “It’s a Wonderful Life.” According to a 2016 issue of Smithsonian Magazine, the tradition of gathering to tell scary stories on Christmas Eve dates to the Middle Ages when the religious holiday and the pagan ritual were still feted, side-by-side.
To celebrate this age-old Christmas tradition and to share a little unexplained phenomenon with the NEPA community, On-Cue Pop Up Players will be presenting Creepy Christmas for one show only, on Sunday, December 11th at 4:00 PM at Chinchilla United Methodist Church. Creepy Christmas is a multi-player, dramatic performance including two classic, scary Christmas stories: Smee by A.M. Burrage and Between the Lights by E.F. Benson. Both stories have been adapted for the stage by On-Cue Players member, Marcie H. Riebe. Creepy Christmas is directed by Laura M. Heffron.
This afternoon of chilling, unexplainable encounters is free and open to the public; however, donations will be gratefully accepted. Audience members are also welcome to purchase and enjoy refreshments while having a chance to interact with members of the On-Cue Pop Up Players theatrical company. On-Cue Pop Up Players (OCPUP) is a newly-formed (Summer, 2022) group of actors, directors, and writers who have joined together to create traveling shows. This allows OCPUP members the freedom to perform their shows in a variety of different venues in order to entertain a variety of different audiences, who might not otherwise be able to attend shows within a theater complex. Chinchilla United Methodist Church (CUMC) is excited to host OCPUP and to open its doors to welcome those who wish to enjoy a new type of holiday experience. CUMC hopes that this event may become a much-loved community tradition.
CUMC is located at 411 Layton Road, South Abington Township. Parking is available behind the church building. Accessible parking and an accessible entrance are available at the front of the church building. Additional questions may be directed to Laura M. Heffron, Creepy Christmas Director, at (570) 578-5761.
