Internationally renowned composer Vaclav Nelhybel was one of the most acclaimed, respected,  and prolific composers of the 20th century. After World War II he was affiliated as composer and conductor with Swiss National Radio, was a lecturer at the University of Fribourg, and became the first musical director of Radio Free Europe, a post he held until immigrating to the United States in 1957.

During his long career in the United States, he worked as a composer, conductor, teacher, and lecturer throughout the world, winning many international prizes and awards for his work. At the time of his death on March 22, 1996, he was composer in residence at The University of Scranton, which is now home to The Nelhybel Collection, which includes his published and unpublished compositions, personal papers, manuscript scores, and other materials, His music is performed all over the world.
