NFL Star to Speak about Playing Drug Free

Lackawanna College, in conjunction with the Northeastern PA Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), will present former New York Giants star Lee Rouson, who will speak to student-athletes about playing drug free.  The event will take place on March 8, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Lackawanna College Student Union Gymnasium.  The initiative is called “One Way 2 Play” (OW2P) and is one of America’s most successful, faith-based drug and alcohol prevention programs.  Since OW2P began in 1991, more than 500,000 students have committed to play drug and alcohol-free with nearly 50,000 making commitments just last year alone.  Rouson, who played seven seasons in the NFL with the Giants and Cleveland Browns, is the New Jersey FCA Regional Director.   He was a two-time Super Bowl Champion in New York under Bill Parcells.  The event is open to public.  Call Lackawanna College Career Coordinator Dan LaMagna for more information at (570)-504-1579.  For more information on FCA and OW2P, visit them on the web at www.fca.org.

The party doesn’t have to stop when the parade ends.  — The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple is once again the place to be after this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The Center’s annual Post Parade Party will immediately follow the parade on March 13, 2010. The party begins at 11 AM and continues until 5 PM with live entertainment by Kilrush. Celebrate the founding of Pennsylvania and be treated to an informative lecture on the "Irish Presence in Eckley." The 1 p.m. presentation will be delivered by Bryan Dunnigan, president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Hazleton, Division 3, and an Eckley Associate. His talk, in the museum's auditorium, will be illustrated with displays and he will appear in authentic period costume. The presentation is free and open to the public. Charter Day Observed With Celebration of Welsh Heritage plus additional interesting activities:  Sunday, March 14, 2010, is Charter Day in Pennsylvania. It is traditionally a day when Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites open admission-free in commemoration of the document by which King Charles II granted to William Penn the vast tract of land known today as Pennsylvania. From Noon to 5:00 PM the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum will celebrate the culture of the Welsh, one of the diverse immigrant groups significant in the history of the Commonwealth from the time of William Penn.  The exhibition tells the story of the Welsh mining industry and the migration of Welsh miners to the Pennsylvanian coalfields and to other parts of the USA and is arranged by the Welsh Assembly Government in New York in association with the National Museum Wales, National Library of Wales, National Union of Miners, the South Wales Miners’ Library, and the St. David’s Society of Scranton. The exhibition will be at the Anthracite Heritage Museum through May 2010.  Additional CHARTER DAY 2010 activities planned for the afternoon:  At 1:00 p.m., local artist Gene Moyer will be signing copies of his two delightful new books: Coal Age Creatures and Strange Sea Creatures.  Each book represents a rich photographic essay by Robert Sallavanti, Ph.D., with commentary by the Artist, Gene Moyer.  The books will be available for purchase in the Museum Store.  At 2 p.m., Dr. William D. Jones, will present a lecture and book signing on the Welsh in Scranton.  The lecture is free and open to the public.   He is the author of the book: Wales in America: Scranton and The Welsh 1860-1920.  Copies of the book will be available for sale in the Museum Store.  At 3 p.m., the St. David’s Male Chorus will give a choral performance at the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum, featuring Welsh songs and Broadway show tunes.  The performance is free and open to the public and is being held in conjunction with Charter Day in Pennsylvania.   Don't miss out on this fun day of heritage right in your own backyard!  Charter Day is free admission!

The Office Fan Tour

The tour kicks off at noon inside The Vintage Theatre at 119 Penn Ave in Downtown Scranton. The tour guides welcome fans with a video created by local NBC affiliate, WBRE, featuring fun behind-the-scenes interviews with cast members. After a few words from our guest speakers and other fun-tivities, fans are escorted across the street to see the now infamous "Scranton Welcomes You" sign inside The Mall at Steamtown. We then hit the buses by 1 p.m.  The tour itself includes a family style lunch at Cooper's where fans have a chance to try a fresh beet salad that would even make Dwight smile with delight. Other sites and drive-by photo opportunities on the tour include The Scranton Times-Tribune, Farley's, The Bog, Paper Magic, Mifflin Avenue, the Penn Paper Building, the Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Scranton City Hall, he University of Scranton, Lake Scranton, the Radisson Lackawanna Station hotel, Alfredo's Pizza (NOT Pizza by Alfredo!) and much more.
